Name: Markus Cook
College: Jackson State
Position: Center/Guard
Height: 6’2″
Weight: 315
Q: If you could describe your style of play in 3 words, what would they be?
Markus: Filthy, Violent, and Smart.
Q: How are you going to train/prepare this offseason in preparation for the draft or other pro opportunities?
Markus: I am training with my strength coach Lavell Williams at Jackson State University. I want to continue to work on my technique and explosion. I also want to work on becoming before bigger, faster, and stronger for the next level.
Q: If you could compare yourself to one current or former NFL player who would it be and why?
Markus: I would compare my style of play to Maurkice Pouncey. I like the way he pulls from the center position, and finishes his blocks. I model a lot of my game after him.
Q: When you are studying film, what do you focus on or look for?
Markus: When I’m studying film, I study the whole defense. As a center, you are the quarterback of the offensive line. You have to know all the different looks that a defense may give you. I like to watch a team’s blitzes and pressures. I also look for line movement in the defensive line, and look for stacks in linebackers and safeties because they show where the pressure is coming from. I observe how the linebackers fit the run, and think of ways that my team can exploit their defense. On the players I’m facing, I like to watch them in the 4th quarter because that’s where most players show what they really do.
Q: What separates you from other players at your position?
Markus: I’m very quick off the ball and technique sound. I can also stop a bullrush in pass protection, and create running lanes in run blocking. I can make all the calls needed from the center position as well. Another strength that I have, is cleaning the pocket in pass protection, when I’m free I try to destroy any defender in sight.
Q: What kind of abilities would you bring to a team that will stand out both on and off the field?
Markus: The ability to give maximum effort will stand out to any team. I will play with my hands, and as violent as possible. My knowledge of the game can really help a team and my teammates as well. Also, I’m a leader, I like to take control and help my teammates become better players. Off the field, I am a special education major. I’m a very caring person which translates on and off the field. Lastly, I’m a bright young man who can comprehend material in a timely manner which will help me learn the playbook on the next level.
Q: What is your final pitch/sell to NFL and other pro league scouts?
Markus: I’m a player who is going to do anything possible that can to help your organization. I will give diligent effort everyday, and I am committed to being the best football player that I can possibly be. If you take a chance on me, I promise I will not let you down. All I need is a shot to prove myself.
