Walter Fletcher: 2020 Pro Prospect Interview

Name: Walter Fletcher
School: Ball State/Edinboro
Position: RB/KR
Height: 5’9″
Weight: 197

Q: What goals did you set and/or accomplish in your final collegiate season?

Transferring from division 2 to division 1, I wanted to show that I could compete at a high level at any division. Coming into the season, I wanted to show scouts that I’m a versatile football player. I wanted to show my coaching staff that I was going to be the player that they envisioned me to be when they recruited me. I wanted to prove to myself that I belonged. Stats weren’t on my mind because if you do things the right way, everything will fall in place and it did.

Q: What would your coaches and teammates say about the type of player you are?

I believe that they would say that I’m a team first guy. I show up every day ready to work and love the game of football. When I transferred to Ball State, my teammates and coaching staff welcomed me with open arms. It motivated me to work harder than ever and to be the best teammate that I could be for the guys around me.

Q: When you are studying film, what do you focus on to improve your game?

I look for the little things that I can correct or critique. Whether that’s false stepping when taking a handoff, not having tight enough hands when pass blocking or simply not getting enough depth on a route. I’m hard on myself and there’s always room for improvement. When I notice that they’re things that I can clean up from watching film, I’ll work on correcting it during practice or some of my teammates and I will do extra drills after practice.

Q: What separates you from the other pro prospects at your position?

My versatility. As I mentioned before, that’s something that I wanted to show scouts this season. My coaches did a great job putting me in different positions to have success. Our offense was extremely versatile. It gave me the opportunity to play in shotgun and line up under center. It showed that I can run both outside and inside zone when given the opportunity. I caught swing passes out of the backfield as well as playing the receiver position in certain formations. I was also featured in wildcat packages and made contributions on special teams.

Q: What is your offseason plan to train and prepare for professional opportunities?

I’ll be working with Chip Smith in Atlanta to prepare for my Pro Day. I plan on refining my game as well as improving my strength and explosiveness. The little things are what separates the best athletes and that’s something that I want to improve on in the next couple of months.

Q: What kind of strengths and abilities will you bring to a team that will stand out both on and off the field?

Play making ability, leadership and preparation. Those are qualities that you must have in order to be a successful football player. Those are 3 qualities that I take pride in on and off the field.

Q: What is your final pitch to the NFL or any other pro leagues?

You’ll be getting a player who loves the game and will do whatever it takes to win. I’m a team first guy who just needs an opportunity. To even be considered a pro prospect is a blessing and I want to help an organization achieve their goals.
