Mason Gray: 2020 Pro Prospect Interview

Name: Mason Gray
School: Robert Morris/Albany
Position: S/CB/Nickel/ST
Height: 6’0″
Weight: 190

Q: What goals did you set and/or accomplish in your final collegiate season?

The goals I set were measured by my standards rather than accolades, even though I received some. I came into my last season with the goal of being a more outspoken leader and one that leads both on and off the field and I accomplished that task. I also came in wanting to win every rep when I was on the field and give my all to my teammates each play.

Q: What would your coaches and teammates say about the type of player you are?

They would say I am the type of player that sacrifices for the team and gives his all when on the field. They would say I also am very motivating and always try to better myself and those around me. “He always gives tips, and helps correct the little things.”

Q: When you are studying film, what do you focus on to improve your game?

When I study film I always start by studying the receivers, rb, and qb. I look at how receivers run routes, what foot is up when they run certain routes, what do they do on run plays, etc. With running backs it is similar I look at do they like getting down hill now, does he spin on contact, is he a jump cutter etc. I allow practice reps and film with coaches to get me familiar with the team’s tendencies; but most of the time I have found studying the players tendencies, trusting my coaches play call, as well as trusting my eyes and reading my keys has given me the most benefit while studying film.

Q: What separates you from the other pro prospects at your position?

My eye discipline and ability to listen and execute what the coach wants at a high level very quickly. I am a stickler when it comes to details and the little things such as a false step in a break and eye discipline when diagnosing runs and routes.

Q: What is your offseason plan to train and prepare for professional opportunities?

I will be participating in The Spring League march 3-11 as well as training at api fitness in Maryland. I will be training with my defensive back coaches as well: coach Donald Cox and coach Panker (they are the best in the business to me).

Q: What kind of strengths and abilities will you bring to a team that will stand out both on and off the field?

I am a natural leader and I embrace it on and off the field. I also continue to strive to get better at everything I do whether it be football, being a leader, or just trying to be a good man and role model for others. On the field I am like a sponge and play multiple positions at a very high level, whether its starting at safety, corner nickel, sprinting down on kickoff, or being an anti gunner i am always trying to win each rep and show I’m better on that play over and over again. I am not complacent and am always striving for more and better!

Q: What is your final pitch to the NFL or any other pro leagues?

I give my all for the name across my chest and the name across my back. Any organization that gives me a shot will not be disappointed because those two names mean everything to me, just as they did in college and I will strive to always be my best and represent those names to the fullest.
