Malik Scates: 2024 Pro Prospect Interview

Name: Malik Scates
School: University Of Dubuque
Position: C/OG
Height: 6-4
Weight: 338

Q: What goals did you set and/or accomplish in your final collegiate season?

The main goal I set for myself was to either give up 0 or only just 1 sack this season and only 1 person got past me.

Q: What would your coaches and teammates say about the type of player you are?

They would say that I’m an elite run blocker and a good pass protector and a good teammate that cares about the game.

Q: When you are studying film, what are the things you focus on to improve your game?

I’m really looking at 3 things which are 1. My pad level 2. My footwork 3. My hand placement. And then I’m looking at my teammates and what their job is on the play in case we need an emergency shift in the line and I have to play out of position.

Q: What separates you from the other pro prospects at your position?

I’m a competitor that loves to compete. I am a mauler in the run game and always improving in the pass. I have good footwork for a big guy. I used to play DL so I have a good understanding on what they’re taught and what should be their approach to certain schemes that the offense would come out in.

Q: What is your offseason plan to train and prepare for professional opportunities?

I’m going to train with my guy Chris Batti (former NIU WR) and DJ Johnson (former Jets DB) at some point I would love to travel to Texas to get some work in with OL guru’s Duke Manyweather or Logan Tillman.

Q: What kind of strengths and abilities will you bring to a team that will stand out both on and off the field?

I’m going to bring a positive influence into the locker room and community. I’m pretty good with fan engagement. And for the team bringing versatility I can play everywhere center, guard, tackle it doesn’t matter.

Q: What is your final pitch to the NFL and any other pro leagues?

If the level or division that I play at has any team questioning my ability to play please know I do have experience at the D1 level and bringing me onto your team will have nothing but a positive effect. I am coming in to work and giving it my all. I just need a shot.
