James Smith-Williams: 2020 Pro Prospect Interview

Name: James Smith-Williams
School: North Carolina State
Position: DE/OLB
Height: 6’4″
Weight: 265

Q: What goals did you set and/or accomplish in your final collegiate season?

My first goal was to be the best captain I could be and a leader of men. I set out goals to be an all conference player and to have double digit sacks. Unfortunately injury derailed my last year.

Q: What would your coaches and teammates say about the type of player you are?

Dependable, accountable and tough.

Q: When you are studying film, what do you focus on to improve your game?

It depends on the time of the year. When it’s spring ball or fall camp I do a lot of self scouting. Watching my first step, hand usage or placement, and how I’m responding to blocks. Among other things. In season I watch a lot of my opponent and what moves beats him.

Q: What separates you from the other pro prospects at your position?

My athleticism is elite, which was put on display at the combine. But I also think my football IQ and my mentality are also separators.

Q: What is your offseason plan to train and prepare for professional opportunities?

I spent months training in Texas for the combine. Now with the coronavirus I have been home but I still train everyday. Now more so on the fundamentals of my craft.

Q: What kind of strengths and abilities will you bring to a team that will stand out both on and off the field?

I think my leadership and involvement in the community. But also my ability to be used all over the defensive front and on special teams.

Q: What is your final pitch to the NFL/CFL or any other pro leagues?

There’s isn’t a more mature prospect in the draft class that has my athletic tools and desire to win.
