Evan Powell: 2020 Pro Prospect Interview

Name: Evan Powell
School: Monmouth
Position: LB
Height: 6’0″
Weight: 220

Q: What goals did you set and/or accomplish in your final collegiate season?

In my final collegiate season, I had one goal that I was working to achieve and that was bringing home a conference championship.  In my first three years at Monmouth, we had come up short each and every year against our conference rival Kennesaw State.  However, this past season, we were able to come out on top and win our first ever Big South Football Title.  As a senior captain, there is no better feeling than being a part of one of the greatest teams in school history.

Q: What would your coaches and teammates say about the type of player you are?

I believe that my coaches and teammates would describe me as a player whom cared much more than individual success and statistics. Someone who likes to bring the energy day in and day out whether it was an early morning off-season lift or a playoff game.  I love being loud on the field in hopes to spread the energy and help elevate everyone around me.

Q: When you are studying film, what do you focus on to improve your game?

When studying film, I always focus on plays that I did not execute well on.  For most people, they like to watch plays in which they did good and only focus on that.  However, I believe that the only way to learn is from mistakes.  Therefore, I try to focus on and study the plays in which I did not reach my full potential.

Q: What separates you from the other pro prospects at your position?

I believe that the way I conduct myself on and off the field is what makes me different from other pro prospects at my position.  My hatred for losing allows me to play with 100% heart– nothing short of that.  Most importantly, though I may not have top tier numbers, I believe that I have a great nose for the ball…I believe I am a PLAYMAKER.  Whether it’s on defense or special teams, I love to be a part of the game in any way that I can.

Q: What is your offseason plan to train and prepare for professional opportunities?

My offseason plan to train and prepare for opportunities is nothing different than what I have been doing since the season came to an end.  I have been training at ESSA Sports Performance since January, which has paid off greatly both mentally and physically.  With this pandemic currently going on in the world today, I have been doing at home training with my older brother, Jake Powell, whom is currently a tight end for the New York Guardians.

Q: What kind of strengths and abilities will you bring to a team that will stand out both on and off the field?

Some things that I will be able to bring to a team are high energy and hard work.  I am not scared to speak up  when I see something not right or not to its full potential.  I believe that energy and attitude is contagious and so if I’m able to bring that each and every day; I can spread that to those around me.  Football is more than a sport but instead a lifestyle, as I have learned many things through the sport that I apply to my life.

Q: What is your final pitch to the NFL or any other pro leagues?

My entire life I have defied odds and have figured out ways to not only become a better player, but also a better person.  I am a competitor—I love to win.  I cannot settle until I am happy with the results that I end up with.  This is not the end, but instead just the beginning—and I’m excited to see what the future holds.
