Name: DaRon Gilbert

Height: 6-1

Q: What goals did you set and/or accomplish in your final collegiate season?
Transferring in to NIU I wanted to start and play right away since I only had one year left. I ended up starting all 13 games and contributed a lot to the defense and some on special teams as well. We finished the season as Camellia Bowl Champs as well which was the highlight of the season.
Q: What would your coaches and teammates say about the type of player you are?
I think they’d say relentless effort to the ball, dependable, a player who is not afraid to compete, and ultimately someone loves and respects the game.
Q: When you are studying film, what are the things you focus on to improve your game?
I watch a lot of film so I look for tendencies in the offense and how they’ll attack us based off our structure. I like to understand down and distance and where I’m at on the field as that can give me an idea of personnel and tendencies I’m getting which helps me able to play faster. After that I take time to study players I’ll be matched up against and see how I can use my skill set to make plays against them.
Q: What separates you from the other pro prospects at your position?
I played safety at my old school (Lafayette College) and made a switch to Linebacker at NIU. I’d say my versatility being able to cover TE’s, RB’s and even slots while still being able to fit the run and stay physical in the box is what sets me apart.
Q: What is your offseason plan to train and prepare for professional opportunities?
The goal is always to be bigger stronger and faster year in and year out. I have a good group of guys who I train with and we push each other competing in our workouts, and holding me accountable for the goals I set for myself. I want to be in the best shape possible to compete and earn a spot on a team that will take a chance on me rather it’s the NFL, CFL or other Pro Leagues.
Q: What kind of strengths and abilities will you bring to a team that will stand out both on and off the field?
My versatility being able to cover and also being physical in the box. Using my platform off the field I’ve worked in many non profit organizations to help build the community and ensure a brighter future for those younger than me.
Q: What is your final pitch to the NFL and any other pro leagues?
I’m going to compete from Day 1 and challenge those around me on the team. I want to help win, build/sustain a winning culture and contribute rather it be on defense or special teams. I love this game and I truly believe how I play, and my effort displays that.
