Q: What goals did you set and/or accomplish in your final collegiate season?

My goal for the Aurora University Spartans was to win a national championship. We won our first challenge, but we were defeated in the second round. We have remained undefeated in conference play for five consecutive years. The goal of maintaining my national ranking for punt returns and punt returns with touchdowns was realized this season. I was honored to be selected All-American on multiple levels and all purpose player the year for division three football. Some of my personal goals: As a leader I wanted to lead vocally/by example, mentor and support younger players, and enhance my ability to solve problems. As a wide receiver, I wanted to improve my yards after catch, enhance my leadership on the field, and further my knowledge of defensive schemes. As a kick/punt returner, I wanted to increase my awareness, anticipate blocks, return two+ punts and be an All American. 1st Team All-Region by D3 football.com. 1 st Team All-Conference by Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. 1 st Team All-Academic. Q: What would your coaches and teammates say about the type of player you are?

Head Coach Don Beebe ~ “James Mautino is one of the most dynamic players I have ever coached. His ability to return punts is 2nd to no one. He’s also an extremely good slot receiver. But above all that, he’s one of the greatest human beings I’ve known. I’m honored to have coached him.” I believe that my teammates would describe me as relentless and selfless. I always give my best effort and I would give anything to see my guys succeed.

Q: When you are studying film, what are the things you focus on to improve your game?

Studying the playing style, strategies, and tendencies of the upcoming opponents Analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of specific players on the opposing team Situational Awareness/Evaluation, how a player/team reacts to third-down plays, red zone situations, two-minute drills etc. Self-Performance Evaluation, I’ll analyze performances from years past games Scouting Special Teams to understand the tendencies and strategies of the opposing team’s special teams units.

Q: What separates you from the other pro prospects at your position?

What sets me apart from other pro prospects at my position is my exceptional versatility. Throughout my collegiate career at Aurora University, I’ve demonstrated the ability to compete at an elite level in multiple facets of the game. As a wide receiver, I focused on improving my yards after catch, enhancing on-field leadership, and deepening my understanding of defensive schemes. Simultaneously, as a kick/punt returner, I successfully increased my awareness, anticipated blocks, and achieved the goal of returning multiple punts, earning All-American recognition. I bring a unique combination of skills and achievements that make me a valuable asset to any team. My dedication to both physical and mental aspects of the game, coupled with my proven track record, sets me apart as a dynamic and multifaceted player in the pro prospect pool.

Q: What is your offseason plan to train and prepare for professional opportunities?

I am currently working with some experienced personal trainers to enhance my strength, speed, and agility. I also throw multiple times a week with some of the AU quarterbacks.

Q: What kind of strengths and abilities will you bring to a team that will stand out both on and off the field?

On the field: I am extremely versatile, I have played multiple positions on the offensive side of the ball as well as special teams. I would also say that my strength, speed, and agility are major contributions to my success on the field. Off the field: Professionalism and Community engagement is important. I believe that how you act off the field is a reflection of your program. Fortunately at AU, Coach Beebe has done a great job with the football team. Annually, we dedicate our time to support the city of Aurora, whether it involves cleaning up roadsides or assisting at the local food pantry.

Q: What is your final pitch to the NFL and any other pro leagues?

I bring a unique combination of skills and achievements that set me apart as a dynamic player ready for the challenges of the next level. In my final collegiate season with the Aurora University Spartans, I aimed for the pinnacle—a national championship. While we fell short, our team’s success in the first challenge and maintaining an undefeated conference play record for five consecutive years reflects my commitment to excellence and winning culture. Individually, I have achieved national recognition as an All-American on multiple levels and earned the title of all-purpose player of the year for Division III football as well. My leadership qualities extend beyond the field, as highlighted by Coach Don Beebe, who considers me one of the most dynamic players he has ever coached. My teammates describe me as relentless and selfless, always giving my best for the collective success of the team. On the field, my versatility stands out—I excel in multiple positions on offense and special teams. As a wide receiver and as a kick/punt returner/special teams guy. My commitment extends beyond game day. In film study, I meticulously analyze opponents, evaluate situational awareness, and conduct self-performance evaluations. This thorough preparation ensures that I bring both physical and mental strengths to every game. Looking ahead to the professional stage, I am actively working with experienced trainers to enhance my strength, speed, and agility. Regular throwing sessions with AU quarterbacks keep me sharp and ready for the challenges of the next level. Off the field, I represent professionalism and community engagement.
