Jamal Stovall: 2019 Draft Prospect Interview

Name: Jamal Stovall
School: St Francis (IL)
Position: DB
Height: 6’0″
Weight: 190

Q: What goals did you accomplish heading into your final collegiate season?

In my final college season, I accomplished a lot that was overlooked. Many people look at the big accolades. All-Conference, All-American Awards. The main goal was to finish my college career victorious and give myself an opportunity at the next level. (A 26-7 Win over Trinity International University and 3 Senior Bowl Invites).

Q: What would your coaches say about the type of player you are?

I am a very competitive player that is a quick learner. I have played for 3 different coaches, in 3 different states, and at 3 different levels in my career. Being the new person, it is easy to come into a new program and be lost with the new system. I took advantage of my quick learning abilities and plugged myself into every system, so I could to make my team better.

Q: When you are studying film, what do you focus on to improve your game?

I watch film based off of my abilities. A lot of people watch film on opponents and study what they do and sometimes forget what their own tendencies are. Opponents watch film on you as well, so you have to take that into perspective. I visualized myself against the WR and based off their scheme, I worked on how I can put myself in the best position to be successful.

Q: What separates you from the other players at your position?

The thing that separates me, is that I have a very short memory. Many people at my position let a 15 yard catch turn into a 60 yard touchdown. The goal on defense is to stop the other team from scoring. Being able to have mental toughness throughout the entire game is a big factor on the success of a defensive back.

Q: How will you train and prepare this offseason for the draft or other pro opportunities?

During the break, I have the luxury of training back at home in Champaign, IL with some of the top under the radar athletes. Working out with people who believe in you and want to see you succeed just as bad as themselves is a key part in growth. This is a great way to prepare me for the upcoming Spirit of America Bowl in January. After the game, I will continue to work on speed and quickness, but also stay sharp on my communication skills. I want to be able to present myself at the highest level, not only on, but off the field.

Q: What kind of strengths and abilities will you bring to a team that will stand out both on and off the field?

My biggest strengths that I can provide a team, will be my quick learning ability and knowledge of the game. I love to learn new things about the game that can help me and my team be successful. A competitive, physical, smart DB, who is willing to get better everyday on and off the field to become a champion.

Q: What is your final pitch or sell to NFL and other pro league scouts?

If you are looking for a guy who is versatile, can shut down the #1 WR, and be fit in the run game when needed, then you have to look no further. I’m ready to make an impact immediately and become a very important player to a special program.
