Isiah Olave: 2019 Draft Prospect Interview

Name: Isiah Olave
School: UC Davis
Position: DB
Height: 5’11″
Weight: 200

Q: What goals did you accomplish heading into your final collegiate season?

As a team, we beat both of our rivals for the first time since I was there, we won our first division 1 conference championship, and made the playoffs for the first time in the division one era while also winning a playoff game. Individually, I was named all-conference for the first time in my career.

Q: What would your coaches say about the type of player you are?

I think my coaches would describe me as a player that’s selfless and versatile, a guy that’s willing and able to play multiple positions for the betterment of the team, someone who is a leader that can get guys to respond, and an extremely smart player that understands and studies the game on a different level.

Q: When you are studying film, what do you focus on to improve your game?

When I’m studying film I focus on the things or mistakes from the games or things I need work on that I can improve on at practice to take my game to the next level and not let my opponents exploit those same things. When it comes to the opponents, I focus on basic tendencies like how often a team runs/passes, favorite formations, and what plays to expect. I’ll also look at my assignment, like who I’m lining up against, is he a possession receiver or is he a deep threat? The type of routes he runs, the type of blocker he may be, or the type of runner he is. Those are type of things I like to clue into to be better prepared.

Q: What separates you from the other players at your position?

I believe my IQ and versatility separate me from a lot of guys at my position. Not a lot of guys are able to lineup all over the field and understand and be able to play multiple positions at a high level. I’ve started at multiple positions in my career and also was in charge of getting people lined up in the right positions and letting them know what to expect. The mental aspect of the game is just as important as the physical aspect so my IQ separates me from the others.

Q: How will you train and prepare this offseason for the draft or other pro opportunities?

To prepare for pro opportunities I’ve been training with a speed and agility coach who’s been working with me getting me stronger and faster to be ready for the next level. I’ve also been lifting 4-5 times a week to get bigger and stronger for the next level but also working on my flexibility to be able to move fluidly. Most importantly I’ve been working on position specific drills and focusing on getting my footwork more crisp and learning from some pros while doing that.

Q: What kind of strengths and abilities will you bring to a team that will stand out both on and off the field?

I will bring leadership on and off the field, by being a positive influence in the community and in the locker room. I will be a guy that can be plugged in and play multiple positions wherever I’m needed at a high level for a team which is what all professional teams like. You won’t have to worry about me with any drama, I’ll just put my head down and work to perfect my craft and help make a team and city better.

Q: What is your final pitch or sell to NFL and other pro league scouts?

If you want a savage who’s going to come in and compete from day one and do everything in his power to make his team better, come get me and let’s get to work.
