Griffin Trau: 2019 Draft Prospect Interview

Name: Griffin Trau
School: Richmond
Position: K
Height: 5’7″
Weight: 175

Q: What goals did you accomplish heading into your final collegiate season?

Leading into the season, I was really happy with my summer strength and conditioning work. Staying in solid shape makes a huge difference, especially late in the season.

Q: What would your coaches say about the type of player you are?

I think I’ve built up a pretty steady reputation for consistency. I’m definitely at my best under pressure.

Q: When you are studying film, what do you focus on to improve your game?

Kicking is in the tiny details. I take a really close look at rhythm and timing. The goal is that every kick looks more or less the same.

Q: What separates you from the other players at your position?

It all comes down to preparation. On game day there’s no thinking, just staying focused and doing the job.

Q: How will you train and prepare this offseason for the draft or other pro opportunities?

I’ve continued with a similar strength and conditioning program as I used through college. I’ve also included more proprioceptive work to focus on balance and body control.

Q: What kind of strengths and abilities will you bring to a team that will stand out both on and off the field?

Work ethic and focus are two big themes of my game. Many games are decided by field goals and PATs. You won’t get far in kicking if you don’t show coaches and players that you put in your share.

Q: What is your final pitch or sell to NFL and other pro league scouts?

I was one kick away from breaking the NCAA FCS all-time FG% record (min. 50 attempts). With a career 81.03% (47-58), I’ve never missed a kick in overtime or on a game-critical placement. My two 40+ yard misses this season were actually blocked/tipped kicks (the only two of my career), and not the result of leg strength issues as is routinely assumed. In terms of consistency, I think those numbers are pretty consistent with the college performances of current NFL kickers.
