Darrien Fields: 2019 Draft Prospect Interview

Name: Darrien Fields
School: Marietta
Position: QB
Height: 5’9″
Weight: 170

Q: What goals did you accomplish heading into your final collegiate season?

In my final year we won the most games since the 1990s and held the longest winning streak since the 1920s. I became Marietta College’s all time leading passer by become the statistical leader in Career Touchdowns, Career Passing Yards, Career Completions & Completion Percentage; along with several single game and season records.

Q: What would your coaches say about the type of player you are?

My coaches would say that I am as close to having a coach actually in the game as you can get. My passion and commitment to preparation is unmatched and I believe that is the true testament to any of my success. My coaches know that I am more than capable of executing every play in our playbook and will even get our offense into the best play on each down.

Q: When you are studying film, what do you focus on to improve your game?

I focus mostly on fundamental flaws in my technique. Our coaching staff does a great job of coaching us hard, which has ingrained a constant self-criticism in me. So when critiquing myself I focus on why bad throws were bad and how to improve my mechanics to fix them.

Q: What separates you from the other players at your position?

I feel my ability to understand and apply concepts from the QB room set me apart from other quarterbacks. Being able to take what’s on the white board and apply it in real life situations is something a lot of quarterbacks struggle doing. Another thing that separates me is my improvability. Being able to stay calm in the midst of chaos and create plays when there aren’t any to be made has definitely separated me from most players at my position.

Q: How will you train and prepare this offseason for the draft or other pro opportunities?

Getting back to the basics. I plan to increase my arm strength and clean up mechanical flaws in my technique. A lot of my game is based on making the plays that are given to me, so I need to be prepared to make the plays that players at my position make at the next level.

Q: What kind of strengths and abilities will you bring to a team that will stand out both on and off the field?

My ability to rally any group of guys together stand out the most. I have played with guys from all walks of life and am confident in being able to lead a team.

Q: What is your final pitch or sell to NFL and other pro league scouts?

I know I’m not the most physically imposing or that I don’t pass much of the eye test. What I bring to the game and to a team not everyone has. I have a fear of letting my teammates down so every game, they get 100% of me. Like they say, “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog”, and I bring the fight out on every play.
