Q: What goals did you accomplish heading into your final collegiate season?
Going into my final season, my major goals were to improve my all-around game and help my team win a national championship. Unfortunately we came up short in the playoffs.
Q: What would your coaches say about the type of player you are?
Coaches would say that I’m unselfish, relentless, and reliable. They would say that I lead by example, I’m a quick leaner, I never take a play off, that I’m a great guy to have in the locker room, and that I’m obsessed with getting better every single day.
Q: When you are studying film, what do you focus on to improve your game?
When studying film, I often look at defensive tendencies along with different personnel that they use in various situations. I also study the linebackers’ and safeties’ coverage skills so I know what to expect in the pass game, how the defense moves and tackles in space, and I study blitz pickup (linebackers and D-line rushing technique and the tendencies) so I’ll always know who to block. I also look at little things like a linebacker subbing himself out in the 4th quarter because he’s tired, or the defense losing their confidence in the 3rd quarter because they can’t keep up with the offense. These things give a lot of insight into what to expect. Knowing when the competition shows weakness on film always gives opportunity to expose that weakness during a game. My main goal is to go into a game already knowing where defenders will most likely be, the weakest and strongest part of the defense, which plays the defense will probably have a hard time matching up against, and how the defense will play against our set of plays for all 4 quarters.
Q: What separates you from the other players at your position?
What separates me is that I can play on any special teams; I’m very good at understanding not only plays but the larger conceptual picture about why the play is being called; I can recognize the scheme of the other team’s defense early in the game; I’m good at making plays with my vision and accelerating through open creases; my playmaking ability isn’t limited only to running but I can block; run routes and catch as well; my love for my teammates; I am a leader; and I’m always mentally locked in on the overall team goal no matter what the circumstances look like.
Q: How will you train and prepare this offseason for the draft or other pro opportunities?
I’m doing pro day and off-season training at Ultimate 48 Fitness with Manny Rodriguez. He’s doing a great job of working on my speed mechanics, mobility and flexibility, change of direction, and strength and explosion. Overall he’s preparing me to excel at the next level and exceed every goal that’s already been set in motion.
Q: What kind of strengths and abilities will you bring to a team that will stand out both on and off the field?
On the field, I love the game with a passion and my competitive nature never dies. I respect everyone and fear none. I know God put me in football for a reason so I’m fully dedicated to my team, my organization, and my craft. At the end of the day, if we’re not all working to be great then we’re wasting our time. It’s all or nothing. Overall I’m more than just a running back, but I’m an all around football player. I can be a factor on special teams at any position just as much as I can on offense making plays out the backfield. Off the field, I love my family and friends. My support system truly means the world to me. I love helping people, because the gifts we’ve been blessed with aren’t just for our own benefit, but they’re designed to help serve others and impact the lives of those around us. Most of all I love Jesus. I’ve been through a lot, but he’s brought me through every single challenge that’s presented itself in my life. He’s given me victory and he’s strengthened me to conquer any adversity that comes my way. I know for sure that without him, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
Q: What is your final pitch or sell to NFL and other pro league scouts?
I know wherever I’m blessed to play, I’m going to do everything in my power to help my team be successful. Not only do I want to win, but I want to win the right way. It’s one thing to win a game, it’s another thing to have consistent victories that reflect the greatness that’s been established within the foundation of the organization. That winning culture is contagious and it impacts life on the field as well as off the field. A saying that’s been very impactful in my life is “we move faster alone, but we move farther together.” With that being said, I know that it takes more than a team to win, it takes a family. I want to help build something special with a special group of people so that together we’re seeing the fruit of our labor in the form of the Lombardi Trophy. I know the journey is tough and rigorous, but the destination is even greater. I want to see my teammates reap a reward that words can’t even describe. A reward that impacts not only their life, but their families’ lives for years to come, and I’ll do everything I can to see that come to fruition. That’s my drive. That’s my focus, and I’m dedicated to it. Period.
